Week of August 5th - August 11th, 2013

"You can convert all experiences into miserable ones if you allow your mind to do so. You may have good health and not appreciate it at all. But if you become sick, then you will appreciate what it is to have health. Show gratitude to God for what He bestows on you, without waiting for reverses to make you grateful for what you had.”

 - Paramahansa Yogananda

This Week's Services:

Please join us this Sunday, August 11 for our weekly Service Reading entitled Surmounting Life’s Troubles". The service is from 11 am to 12 noon. Sunday School for children ages 3-12 is also held from 11 am to 12 noon. Parents with younger children may enjoy the service from the infant room located in the Sunday School building. The Reading Service is preceded by a meditation service from 10 to 10:45 am, and by group practice of the Self-Realization Fellowship Energization Exercises at 9:40 am.

Weekly Affirmation:

“O Father, no matter what my tests may be, may I bear them joyously by feeling Thy presence always in my heart.” (Metaphysical Meditations).

  • Our monthly all-day meditation retreat will be held on Saturday, August 24 beginning at 9:00 am with group practice of the SRF Energization Exercises and ending at 4:00 pm. There will be a 30-minute break at 1:00 pm. All are welcome to attend at any time during the day but we ask that you enter or exit the chapel only during chants, readings, or during the break.
  • The Janmashtami Commemoration service celebrating the birthday of Bhagavan Krishna will be held on Wednesday, August 28 beginning at 8 pm. There will be a meditation from 7:00 pm - 7:50 pm.  All devotees who are acquainted with the SRF teachings and the Guru-disciple relationship, and who can participate in the service with sincerity and reverence, are welcome to attend. Devotees are asked to bring a flower or flowers as a symbol of devotion to God and the SRF Gurus, and a donation, if possible, as sign of loyalty to the path of SRF. These donations are sent to the Mother Center to share these sacred teachings with other truth-seeking souls.
  • All activities and events organized by the Houston Center are carried out by dedicated members and friends and we always welcome new volunteers. We especially need help for housekeeping, social events, playing the harmonium, and ushering. If you have a few hours to spare each month and would like to volunteer, please let us know by contacting a member of the Managing Team after services.
  • Please join us this and every Sunday after the services for our weekly juice social in the Sunday School building.
